5 Things to Know Before Your Family Photo Session

Let go of perfect. Embrace the real. Capture the love.

Family sessions don’t have to be stressful.
If the thought of getting everyone dressed, out the door, and smiling for photos makes your eye twitch—I promise, it doesn’t have to be that way.

I’ve worked with families of all sizes, with wild toddlers, shy kiddos, tired parents, and chaotic energy (honestly, my favorite kind). My goal isn’t just pretty pictures—it’s capturing connection. And connection is messy and beautiful and real.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind before your session to help you relax, trust the process, and walk away with images you’ll actually love.

A smiling toddler being kissed on both cheeks by his expecting parents during a maternity session near a forest waterfall, with all three wearing white clothing and radiating joy.

The giggles, the kisses, the squishy baby toes—this is the kind of love I live to photograph. It’s not about perfect poses, it’s about your people, your joy, and your story.

1. It’s okay if your kids aren’t “perfect.”

They’re not supposed to be. I don’t expect your toddler to sit still or your 6-year-old to keep smiling for 45 minutes.
Let them be wiggly, curious, silly, and themselves.
That’s when the real magic happens—and those are the moments that make you tear up later.

2. I’ll guide you, not pose you stiff.

I’ll help you with prompts, natural movement, and gentle direction—no awkward "say cheese" vibes here.
Think more: walking together, hugging, tickling, storytelling.
Less: stiff rows and frozen smiles.

3. Plan your outfits with comfort (and layers) in mind.

Flowy dresses photograph beautifully. So do textures like knits, denim, linen, and layers that add movement and depth.
Choose a color palette instead of matching outfits, and let everyone stay comfortable. Happy humans > buttoned-up stress.

Four cousins smiling with their heads stacked together during an extended family photo session in Mississippi. Captured by Anna Klae Photography to showcase joy, connection, and playful posing.

When heads are touching and smiles are this real—you know you’ve captured something special. It’s not about perfection, it’s about connection.

4. We’ll go at your family’s pace.

Sessions are kid-led, not clock-led. If we need to take a break, reset, or follow your little one’s curiosity to a nearby stick or flower—that’s totally okay. Some of the sweetest photos come when we slow down and just let life happen.

5. The imperfect moments are the most honest.

The best photos aren’t the posed ones. They’re the ones where someone’s laughing, the baby’s grabbing your face, or your toddler’s showing off a bug.
These are your people. This is your season.
Let’s capture it like it really is—and I promise, you’ll be glad we did.

💛 Final Thought

All you need to do is show up, be present, and let your family be themselves.
I’ll take care of the rest—from the light and location to the laughter and the love.
